ShangHai is so cool today, how about your city.
Before I answer why use 里 for 哪里, I want to know one thing,
because I think it can help me to answer your question.
Can you tell me why you always ask this kind of question.
‘Why use A not use B for …’. and A and B are same pronunciation,
like (里, 理),(烟, 燕)(机, 鸡). so can you give a short and clear answer
about why you ask this.

Thanks for you told me the weather about your city.
The question you asked me, why don’t use “理” for
“哪里”, the reason is simple, first, we try to
translate “哪里” to English, Most of books translate
it as “Where”, but I think “Where … at” is better,
as I told you before, “里” is a noun, means “inside”,
but it’s Chinese and Chinese Grammar, for English,
I think “里” need to be translated to “at”,
For example,
“你在哪里?” → “Where are you at?”,
Chinese people use a shorter form sometimes,
“你在哪?” → “Where are you?”
so, you can see “里” for “哪里” is same as “at”
for “Where are you at”, (I know, maybe some people
they think ‘Where are you at’ is incorrect, It should be
“Where are you”, anyhow, I just want to let you
know the meaning of “里” for “哪里”.)
now, I think you should know why we use “里”
for “哪里”.
and I am happy to help people to learn Chinese here,
so don’t worry my time, ok then, have a good day
and welcome to www.askbennychinese.com again.

I think you understand ‘里’ very well now.
In Chinese, ‘理’ has 3 main meaning for a verb.
1.(管理; 办理) manage; run; deal with
2.(整理; 使整齐) put in proper order; tidy up; clean up
3.(表示态度; 表示意见) take notice of; pay attention to
For ‘理发’, ’理’means ‘2’.

I think the link is useful for checking Chinese character, but not enough,
for example, you search ‘good’, you can see ‘好’ on first line,
but ‘好’ in Chinese has two main meaning,
1. “好”, “hǎo”, adj, means good. example: 很好. very good.
2. “好”, “hào”, verb, means like. example: 我好吃火锅. I like hot pot.
so, you can use it to check some simple information. but please remember
just ‘simple’.
Btw, I am Mr Joey, :)
