Let’s go back the question “烟台” and “胭台”, I think I need to tell you why Chinese
people name the city as “烟台”. In Ming Dynasty，The HongWu Emperor
built some beacon towers in a mountain, those towers served to raise alarms
(fire during night and smoke in the daytime) against the Japanese pirates.
In Chinese, the formal name of beacon towers is “烽火台”, but maybe
the people in that place don’t like this name, so they gave those beacon towers a
short name — “烟台”, means the tower can rise smoke. and they called the mountain
as “烟台山”, the city which is near by the mountain as “烟台市”. Today, most of people
don’t know the story about those beacon towers , so when they are using “烟台”, they
mean the YanTai City not those beacon towers.
So, Gorsian, that’s why we call the YanTai City as “烟台” not “胭台”.

So Choosing Between any of these YĀN Depends on many factors Like : 1- Historical Events Like Beacons Towers

So they Link this Character 烟( 烟台 ) as a symbo… There are 2 ways to make a new word in Chinese,
1. By meaning, like the name of “YanTai” City, the people is using “烟台”,
as people think those towers can rise smoke so they used
the two characters. This is a tradition way to name something.
2. By pronunciation, often used for something adapted from foreign country,
like “巴士” (bā shì, bus), because Chinese people have never had bus before,
it was from the west.So people also call the bus as “bā shì”, the pronunciation
is almost similar to the English. As for choosing the Chinese characters
for “bā shì”, they use “巴士”, because of the pronunciation"巴" and “士”
which have no negative meaning in Chinese.
I think most of foreigners, they don’t learn Chinese characters just learn
pinyin because Chinese character is hard, but this is not a good way to
understand Chinese.
Please also note that, most of time, when we hear a new chinese word that
we never know before, we alway ask how to write it, not guess it.

In all languages words are build with sylables
(combination of a consonat and a vowel).
Thats how we spell words and seperate them if need be.
Some words are only one sylable long like: yes, no, but,
when some have more syalbles like: women (wo-men)
relativity (re-la-ti-vi-ty) etc.
So there is re unlimitid ways to make new words without
the danger to make a word already excisting.
Not so in Chinese, because all Chinese words
(especially old chinese) excist out of one
sylable only so forexample wo-men which is on word in
English is two in Chinese wo=I men=plural indicator only
used for people. That means that Chinese have many,
many homenyms.
(We build sylables with letters (vowels consonants), spell
words with sylables and write sentences with words.
In Chinese however sylables are words so in that way you could ay
they spell whole sentences! )
So yan on its own can have many meanings when pronounced or
written in pinyin. An other word is neaded
to narrow down its meaning. Forexample lì has many meanigs,
on its own it makes no sence to a Chinese but combined with shǐ
it means history combined with hài it becomes lihai 利害 meaning terrible, formidable.
Maybe this is the reason why Chines has tones to distinguish
between homnimes.
But in writing (there are a view exceptions) each word
has its own character. But that character descibes
the meaning of the word not how it is pronounced.
When Chinese don’t understand what you mean by li hey might
ask ‘lishi de li haishi lihai de li’ the li of lishi or
the li of lihai.

It’s not what I mean, I mean learn
PinYin but don’t learn how to write Chinese
Character is not a good way to understand
Chinese.

Yes, I think you are right, I should say,
“We BETTER to ask how to write it, not guess
it." Of course, you can guess it, but, you know,
many Chinese characters share same pronunciation,
even native Chinese speakers make mistakes
sometimes. I give you this PinYin -
“dà biàn huó rén”, you can try to translate
into Chinese words, don’t ask any Chinese
people, you try to do it by yourself, I will
give you correct answer tomorrow.

Actually “da4bian4 huo2 ren2” is one of the famous Magic trick, in English it would be translated as “The magic of metamorphism”.(for people).
The characters are “大变活人”.
大 = big
变 = to transform
活 = alive
人 = people
so “大变” is very different from “大便”, even though they sound exactly same thing.
Therefore, the Character learning is vital. If you don’t understand or can’t recognize any characters, then to a point, you will be very confused about the Chinese words and the meaning.
