Learning : Days of the Week
Share |

Abstract : The wonderful thing about Chinese is that once you know how to say the numbers, you can pretty much say the days of the week and the months all in one! For example, saying Monday is like saying 'day 1 of the week' = Xīngqī yī and so on! This experience also unravels the mystery behind “Sunday”.

Hi, dàjiā hǎo, huānyíng lái Bennysland, wǒ shì Benny, nǐmen hǎo ma? (Hello everyone, welcome to Bennysland, I am Benny, how are you guys?) Today our experience is about some basic time and question words. You will be able to make more complicated sentence after this experience! First, let us learn some time words:

xīngqī

星期

week

Since we’ve already learn numbers, now we can say weekdays:

xīngqī 星期 + Numbers weekdays

FOR EXAMPLE:

xīngqī yī

Monday

星期一

xīngqī èr

Tuesday

星期二

But “Sunday” is not “xīng qī seven”, be careful guys. Sunday is a special one, in Chinese we say:

xīngqī tiān

Sunday

星期天

shì

to be, yes

Let's make more sentences.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Jīntiān shì xīngqī tiān.

Today is Sunday.

今天是星期天。

Xīngqī tiān wǒ qù Shànghǎi.

I am going to Shanghai on Sunday.

星期天我去上海。

Xīngqī yī nǐ yào qù Pǔdōng ma?

Will you go to Pudong on Monday?

星期一你要去浦东吗?

Shìwǒ xīngqī yī qù Pǔdōng.

Yes, I am going to Pudong on Monday.

是,我星期一去浦东。

Now it’s time to learn question word, this one is a bit longer:

shénme shíhou

什么时候

when

we put it in the beginning or after subject:

Shénme shíhou nǐ qù Shànghǎi?

When will you go to Shanghai?

什么时候你去上海?

Nǐ shénme shíhou qù Shànghǎi?

When will you go to Shanghai?

你什么时候去上海?

All right guys, feeling better? With these words your Chinese will definitely reach to a new level! Gōngxǐ nǐmen (Congratulations). All you need to do now is go outside, talk to locals. I see you next time. Zàijiàn, xièxie!

It's easy as ABC!
