QUESTION:
Sometimes 不 (bù) is pronounced (bú). As in:
不喜歡 (don’t like)
bù xǐ huān
and
不對 (incorrect)
bú duì
Are there any rules to when 不 is pronounced bù or bú?
謝謝 (thanks)

HI James,
Good questions, In Mandarin, the standard pronunciation of 不 is ‘bù’,
but when the tone of next word is 4, Chinese people used to change
the bù to bú,
For example,
不对 – búduì – wrong;incorrect
不断 – búduàn – continuous
不必 – búbì -not have to
不是 – búshì -It’s not…
And some dictionary uses ‘bù’ alway, so you need to be careful this rule
when you learn chinese and mandarin.
