hey benny i’m a bit confused when you learned us the words for today, yesterday and tomorrow you gave example-sentences and one of them was : zuó tian wo qù Shànghai but when you teach us the usage of na li you say when that you have to use ’’le’’ ( zuó tian ni qù na li ? ) so do you have to use ’’le’’ here because it’s a question or can you just choose if you want to use ’’le’’ or not

Ni hao ND. That’s a very good question. “le” in Mandarin is used to indicate the past tense. I give you an example, have a look the following sentences:

ni qu na li? and ni qu le na li?. The first means “where are you going”? but the second one is “Where did you go”? Now you can see the importance of “le”, which makes the meaning very different.

But why there is no “le” in the sentence “zuo tian wo qu Shanghai”? because there is a time word “zuo tian” in this sentence. It already indicates this happened yesterday. This is one of difference between Mandarin and English. There is no past tense for verbs in Mandarin. When you add time words, you don’t need to add “le”. So both of them “zuo tian ni qu na li” and “zuo tian ni qu le na li” are correct.

I suggest you always add “le” when you mean past tense.

Hope it helps!

Hi Benny, Ni hao ma? Excellent lesson – especially the part about using “le” so you know you refer to the past. I was just confused with “zai” but I think I know what it means now – I would like for you to tell me if I’m right…

Zai is meant to be used as are in this sentence, but shi means are also. Is his because “zai” is a question?

Ni hao Pooshybooshy.

Actually is not because a question. You’re right, “shi” means are, but “zai” means “be/at/in”. In English, you can say “where are you”, but we don’’t say “ni shi na li?” in Mandarin. Or you can say “I’m home”, but we don’t say “wo shi jia” in Mandarin. Instead, we say:

Ni zai na li? = where are you?

Wo zai jia = I’m home

So “zai” is used as are in above sentences, but it’s not equal to “shi”. For example, you can say “wo shi zhong guo ren(I’m a Chinese)”, but you can’t say “wo zai zhong guo ren”.

“zai” is only used to indicate the place where something/somebody is/are.

You got it? Let me know if still have question.

Ah, I see. Xie xie ni, Benny. Zai is used for present (when you ask where someone is or are at that time) and le is used whenever you refer to the past tense.

The PDF and the video have a small difference that I was curious about. The tone mark on ‘na’ and in ‘na li’ has a third tone mark on the pdf, but a second tone mark in the video. Is that because two third tone words cannot be used together? Or is it because of some other rule?

Hi Dave. I appreciate! Actually it should be the third tone. This is an editing mistake that we didn’t noticed. Thank you very much!!

ni hao benny!
I have a question. I read in another lesson that “ma” made the sentence a question, as in “ni hao ma”. so why sn’t it “ni zai na li” not “ni zai na li ma”?

Ni hao Niisan! very good questions!

Because “na li” is already a question word, so you don’t need to put “ma” at the end of a sentence.

Another example:

Zhe shi shen me? = What’s this?

“Shen me” is a question word, so it’s wrong to say “zhe shi shen me ma?”

Faye, the best way is to listen to local’s pronunciation and then to compare to yourself. There are many ways: Tv, movie, CD, of course, the easy way is: to listen to my experiences! :) I’ll always be here if you need help!
