Hello Benny,

My question is about the word “的”. Some people seem to pronounce it as [di], while most text books spell it [de] in Hanyu Pinyin. I was wondering if the [di] pronunciation was limited to Taiwan, or whether this pronunciation was used elsewhere.

谢谢您。

That’s a good question.Charlie.
What you should to follow is that when “的“ is spelt as”di", it is often related to the word"的士"(di shi4)which means taxi or"的哥"(di ge1)which means taxi driver. In other situations, you may spell “的” as de. I do not konw why you compared with Taiwan.

Hi,

I’ve noticed that some Taiwanese actually (not all the time, though) pronounce 的 as [di] where my Mainland friends might pronounce it as [de]. BTW here is a video that shows Teresa Teng (from Taiwan) pronouncing this word (or particle) very clearly as [di], whereas the video below it has another singer pronouncing it as [de]. The song is 月亮代表我的心.

I was just wondering how widespread that pronunciation was and whether it can also be heard in the Mainland or maybe in other overseas communities in that manner.

Thank you for your very prompt response, wow!!! :-)

Hi Jordan,

Jenny’s answer is correct, the standard pronunciation of “的”(alone) is “de”, for sure.

But there are some variations such as Tai wan people do say “di” in some cases, therefore it confuses you.

Besides Jenny’s answer, the word “目的” which means purpose, its pronunciation is “mu di”.

In this case you should pay attention to it

Benny

Oh, I forgot the other case:

目的地 = mù dì di. This “的” is also pronounced as “di”
