how do you decide which hao to use? because theres hao de hao ba and just plain old hao so when are the appropriate times to use each one or can you just use whichever one you want.

ni hao william, this is a good question. People get confused of how to use “hao” and “hao de” “hao ba”, actually, they are the same. “hao de” and “hao ba” is just the local way of saying “ok”

not the same! hao ba is reluctant agreement. you wanna go to the movies, I wanna go to the museum. I think about it and decide that it’s ok if we go to movies instead, so I say ‘na, hao ba. wo me qu kan dian ying ba.’

vs. you wanna go to the movies. I think that’s a great idea, so I say ‘hao de. zou ba!’

or a mom tells a kid to clean his room. he pouts and says ‘hao ba.’ something like that…

You forgot Hao Le! Which means “Ok! Ok!” When someone is bugging you.

I totally agree with Richard’s explanation ,ba吧 contains the meanings of unwillingness ,doubt and sometimes regards.
