Benny -

I also sent an e-mail about this, but I am annoying so I will ask it here too. Do you plan on putting chinese characters on the tests too? Pinyin only is going to drive me CRAZY.

Actually… one more thing to add to that last one.

It would be great if the lessons had chinese characters too. Or maybe just the more advanced ones (after a belt or two), or… maybe just the option for it? So far I like what I see here, and I know it will all be helpful to me. But for somebody who learned characters and not pinyin, the pinyin can give me a headache. And it is hard to understand.

You are purple belt. That’s cool!
To learn chinese character is not easy for a foreigner but if you have determined you will conquer it. Actually, for most foreigners, they just need to speak in chinese in their daily communications. To learn chinese by Pinyin is an efficient way. That’s the choice of the market. However, I am very happy to hear that you would like to learn chinese characters which bear the thousands of years’ culture of China. But I think chinese characters are even harder to learn than Pinyin. Be prepared:)

Calvin Olive,你好, I understand your concern, but our current test system is based on pinyin. Technically, it’s not easy to put characters into the system, we need to redesign the lay out and the questions. And most of our users don’t read characters. They only want to learn how to speak

However, we actually have plans for the future. One of them is to put characters for the black belt.

What do you think?

I was just thinking that if it was both Chinese and pinyin, then people can have the choice. For example, when I was taking the test, I would see a shi2, and think to myself, “I think this is this shi2, but it might be another shi2” And if I saw the character, I would know for certain.

Many people find Chinese characters to be difficult, but I have always found it difficult if I dont know the character. For example, I might not know the meaning of a word. But I look and notice that the character has a “water” radical on it. And so I think, I still don’t know what it means, but I am sure it has to do with water. And then I look at the rest of the sentence and it makes sense. So even if I still dont know exactly what the word is, I can then guess.

Benny – Thanks for the quick response. This site is great and I have already spent a few hours here after finding it yesterday. Please consider adding more Chinese characters, and not just for blackbelt. Maybe purple or red for when things are at least half/half. Then black belt (or maybe a special belt) can be all chinese (except for english to explain things or something)

I was just thinking. My wife is in Karate. When she was a certain belt (like red for example), but did some special things, or was close to the next belt, they would put piece of colored tape on the end to show that she has done something special.

Chinese characters could be done in this same way. Maybe if there was additional (optional) tests during each level, then somebody could be a purple belt. But have a red tip. Meaning they also know characters.

Just thinking… Anyways, I am still trying to get the next belt up. :)

Thanks for your suggestions, they are great. I will definitely talk to my team about putting more characters into the exam.

Have a nice day!
