Once there was man living in the capital of Chu. On an evening he wrote a letter
to his friend who was a minister in the state of Yan. Since the candle wasn’t bright enough,
he ordered his servant to raise the candle. Absentminded he included the words “raise the candle”
in his letter.
When his friend received the letter, he was puzzled by these words “raise the candle”
he couldn’t guess as to what it mend. Then, he said to him self, “Ah I understand, “raise the candle”
means uphold righteousness. He just wants me advise the king to select an honest and righteous
person and put him in the administrative office.
He thus informed the king of this meaning. The king took this advise to heart, and his kingdom was ruled in harmony and peace. But the original meaning in the letter had nothing to do with it!
