Hey mister benny,

I need some help from the best Mandarin teacher in the world.
Do you think you are up to the challenge?
What is the difference between wei4 and dui4? I know they both translate to “for” and “in order to.”
Can you give me some examples on how to use them?

Hi Dave,

“wèi and duì” are always confusing people. They could both mean “for….”. Here are the structures:

1. wèi + somebody + Verb = do something for….
wǒ wèi Benny mǎi lǐ wù = I buy gift for Benny.

2. duì….hěn hǎo/ bù hǎo = be good for/ be bad for
KFC duì nǐ de shēn tǐ bù hǎo = Kfc is bad for your body.

3. duì……lái shuō = for….
duì wǒ lái shuō, zhōng wén hěn róng yì = Chinese is easy for me.

4. wèi le….. = in order to
wèi le xué hǎo zhōng wén, wǒ bì xū měi tiān liàn xí = In order to learn Chinese well, I must practice everyday.

dear Benny: is it correct the same if I write: duì wǒ shuō zhōng wén hēn bu nan =róng yi
zhōng wén = han yu? is is the same?
wǒ wéi Benny mǎi lǐ wù = yi lǐ wù :is it the same?
I mean: is it necesssary put “yi” (one) as a partitive? (some).
thanks!
By the way: you really deserve a big present from me as you are so kind!
for now I send you all my granny love!jajajaja

Hi Claudia,

zhong wen and han yu are the same. But you should say “duì wǒ shuō zhōng wén bu nan”, no “hen”

If you want to say “one”, the sentence should be:

wǒ wèi Benny mǎi “yīge” lǐ wù = I buy a gift for Benny. (“Ge” is a measure word)

Always my pleasure to help you :)

Best regards from Shanghai

Benny
