Dear Val,

In the north of China, especially Beijing, people tend to put “er” after every word. This is a habit or accent of people from north.

While in the south China, people tend to use “li”, both of those 2 are correct.

Benny

Hallo Val

But beware Val, nali can also mean not at all, if you give a compliment to a Chinese person they will modestly say “nǎ lǐ, nǎ lǐ” nǎ lǐ 哪里 哪里

但是哪里的一时也是“不对,不对”。 如果你对中国女人说你很漂亮
她会对你说“哪里,哪里”(=NOT AT ALL)。

Dear 陆蓝克,
中国女人说“哪里”并不是不对的意思,她只是想表现得礼貌和谦虚(she just want to be modest and polite)。“哪里”在这里并没有实际的意思(na3 li3 doesn’t have a literal meaning here)。其实她听到你这么说是非常开心的(actually she’s very happy when you say so)!:)

你好凯伦小姐,

你是对的,哪里哪里实际的意思是“WHERE”,但是不实际得意思是
“It was nothing,I’m flattered”。(可能可以是-我哪里帮助好-我在哪里
说文好)。哪里用这样并不有实际的意思。谢谢你告诉我!

你对我们帮助很大。-哪里,哪里。
You gave us a lot of help. ─It was nothing.
你的英语说得真好。-哪里,哪里。
You speak very good English. ─I’m flattered.

Nali Nali indeed is an expression of modesty and it doesn’t has the litteral meaning of where. (Although I imagine it could com from the litteral meaning,
like “You are vere beatifull” nali nali where, where (i.e where am I beautiful?)
Thank you for your reaction.
