| | Benny the Mandarin Teacher askbenny.net 2010-02-22 / 04:58PM | | Deal Val,
We have lots of versions for restaurant, but normally, we would use “fàn diàn 饭店 (in South)” and 饭馆 fàn guǎn (in north)" for “restaurant”
酒楼,酒家 are used for big restaurants. 餐厅,餐馆 are used in Guan Dong and Hong Kong

| | Dr. Tech askbenny.net 2010-02-25 / 12:36PM | | Your list can be grouped as the followings
1. common names for restaurants, e.g., 饭店 fàndiàn, 餐廳 cāntīng, 酒樓 jiǔlóu, 酒家 jiǔjiā
2. name for specialty restaurants, e.g., 料理店 liàolǐdiàn=normally referring to Japanese restaurant for Sushi and Sashimi, 餃子館 jiǎoziguǎn=restaurant for dumplings
3. name for brand restaurants, e.g., 麥當勞 Màidāngláo=McDonald, 漢堡王 Hànbǎowáng=Burger King
If you are talking about a restaurant in general, use names in #1. | |
