Hi Marvie,

Maybe you can write first in English for 10 sentences, then I can tell you the Chinese.

Benny

Marvie,

In my experience, I have heard 叔叔 (shū shu) used as the English word “uncle”. In the Chinese culture there are many different titles for each different member of the family. For example you would call your older sister 姐姐 (jie jie) whereas you would call your younger sister 妹妹 (mèi mei). It is usually more respectful to use their title than their name when talking directly to them. This is especially true when the person is older than you.

叔叔 (shū shu) is the title for an uncle who is the “younger brother of your father”. The uncle who is the older brother would have a different title.

Although, I have also seen younger children use 叔叔 (shū shu) when talking to adult men who are not really their uncle, I guess out of respect.

Benny, check out my response as I am no expert. Please correct anything that may be wrong. Thanks.
