For the beginners I don’t suggest to learn Characters, First you should learn PinYin, after you learn 200 words, then learn how to write characters, it will be easier to understand and remember.
As for characters, there is no short cuts. The only way and the best way is to practice through writing and reading.
If this is your first time to learn Chinese, please learn PinYin first, leave the characters later
