Dear Benny I have two questions.
1 when “wang” means to hope and when means to forget, as in “bu wang”the meaning is “don’t forget!”.
2 what is the difference of pronunciation in shi chuan (to test),ex. before buy shoes, and xi huan as in wo xi huan bing gao.
many thanks!!!!!

Claudia,
if you’re telling someone “don’t forget!” you say bie2 wang4 别忘 or bu4 yao4 wang4 不要忘

Kevin: thanks!but I am not yet satisfated:I have understood that “don’t forget” is bu yao wang but in this way, the translation became on future!as it were:“you’ll not forget!”or may be, in this case, yao means"do" as in do not forget?
could be, ’cause Mandarin and English grammar often similar.
And: when “wang” means to hope? may be,in this case its writing is different?
sorry to give you all this work!

Dear Claudia,

Let me clarify, actually hope is “xī wàng 希望” and “forget” is “wàng 忘”. Please look at the characters those 2 “wàng” are different characters but with same pronunciation . And of course with completely different meaning. This is a bit confusing if you can’t recoginize Chinese characters.

In Mandarin if we put “búyào” in the begining of the sentence or right after the word “qǐng = inüite”, in this case, “búyào = don’t”, For example:

Bú yào qù Shanghai = Don’t go to Shanghai

Qǐng bú yào hē Coke = Please don’t drink coke.
