Hey benny aka the best mandarin teacher in the world,
How do use before, after, while, and ago in mandarin?
I saw him before I left for Shanghai.
Before you start, you should practice you mandarin.
After I finished writing the book, I started watching tv.
I saw him after I left the house.
While I was going to the house, I saw him talking to his girlfriend.
Three years ago, I started learning mandarin.
I saw him three years ago.

1. ago/ before = yǐqián. For example:
3 tiān yǐ qián wǒ zài zhōngguó = I was in China 3 days ago.
nǐ lái yǐ qián gěi wǒ dǎ diàn huà = Call me before you come.
As you can see, if we put “yǐqián” after a time word, that’s “ago”, but if we put it in between to connect 2 sentences, that’s “before”.
And we don’t put it in the beginning of the sentences

nǐ dào Shanghai yǐ hòu, gěi wǒ dǎ diàn huà = Call me after you arrive Shanghai.
As you can see, “after” is similar usage to the word “before”.
For “while” in Chinese we say “de shí hòu”. We put it in between 2 sentences. for example,
Wǒ zài Shanghai de shí hòu, wǒ fēi cháng máng = While I was in Shanghai, I was very busy.
