Mandarin is widely used in China and Hong Kong. It’s the official common language. While Cantonese is just a local dialect which is used in Hong Kong and Guang Dong province.
As for the characters, in mainland China, we all use only simplified. The traditional characters are used in Hong Kong and Tai Wan. But those 2 look similar for the structures.
