Hi Benny, take a look at the following sentence:

车子行至兴隆陶瓷城时,意外发生了,老人倒在了车上。

In the above sentence 倒 means “to collapse” or “to fall”. So the old man collapsed in the bus. “了” in 倒在了 indicates “past tense” (collapsed). But what I don’t understand is that why 了 is placed after 在 instead of being placed just after 倒. I see this in many Chinese sentences that 了 is placed after 在 and sometimes it is placed just after the verb like in 发生了. What’s the difference between the following two sentences:

车子行至兴隆陶瓷城时,意外发生了,老人倒在了车上。

AND

车子行至兴隆陶瓷城时,意外发生了,老人倒了在车上。

If I put 了 just after verb as I have done in the second sentence, what difference would it make? Please also tell me in what conditions we put 了 after 在?

Hi Lee Kong,

This is the structure "倒在….上 = fall in/ on some place. In this strcture, the past tense word “了” is placed after “在”
