Hi Benny, I found this from a website and just wanted to ask how did it came up into it’s translation… just a little explanation please.. ‘coz I’m a little confuse with “you mei you shen me” all together.

yǒu méi yǒu shén me hǎo fāngfǎ? – is there a good way?

Thanks!

ni hao Mary Joy Rejano,

this is a structure: “Verb + méi + Verb”, if you use this one, you don’t need to put the question word “ma”, because the structure already indicates question. Here are some examples:

yǒu méi yǒu = have or don’t have?

qù bù qù = go or not go?

zuò bú zuò = do or not do?

Ok, let’s see your sentences

yǒu méi yǒu shén me = Is there any…..

yǒu méi yǒu shén me hǎo zhú yì = is there any idea?

yǒu méi yǒu pǐ jiǔ? = Is there any beer?

It’s quite strange translation as there is no “there is”, the answer is we don’t have “there is/ are” in Chinese

Therefore just remember the sentence pattern “yǒu méi yǒu shén me”, that would be easier for you to understand.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Benny
