While compared with Beijing, Shanghai is like a big melting pot with a population largely made up of migrant. It is popularly seen as the birthplace of everything considered modern in China. It is more western style than Beijing.
As a tourist city, shanghai attracts travelers from both home and abroad by its commercial activities rather than scenic beauty. | |

I agree with Benny, that Shanghai is more western style than Beijing. If you’d like to experience Chinese culture, go to Beijing, while if you want to see a modern China, Shanghai probably is the best place to go.
