Ni hao, is there any other way of saying “I would like to have…” because when I used “wo xiang yao” the person couldn’t understand me.

Hi Alissia.
“wo xiang yao” is the most common way to say"I would like to have". Maybe you met a “particular person”. Anyway, if you are in a coffee bar or a restaurant, just tell them what you want. They may also understand you.For instance, when they ask you “May I help you”. You may reply “beer” or “egg fried rice”(dan4 chao3 fan4).

That’s very good, Jenny. In China, people will likely to use “want” instead of using " would like to". Also “xiǎng yao” is more difficult to say than “yào”.

I would like to suggest to use “yào” first.
