I’m really going to have to remember those tones – zuo also means to do, and you means to have… I don’t think the taxi driver will be happy if I keep shouting “have, have!” Remembering left and right should be easy enough, but if I don’t get those tones right…

The tones or the words? The words I just recite in my mind every now and then, until I feel confident that I will remember them. Also, when I watch movies with subtitles, particularly Chinese, I try to see how many of those words or sentences I can translate into Chinese. As for the tones, I’m not worrying too much right now about the tones for all the words – but I will put more effort into it once I’ve got all the basics.

You got it, Pooshybooshy. Tones are really important in Mandarin.

Ni hao Eric, if you don’t know, let me tell you:

zuǒ = left

zuò = to do

yòu = right

yǒu = to have

Hmm… perhaps it would help if I added the tones when I type something in Mandarin? Such as adding zuǒ to zuo, like you have here?

I see. Thank you, Benny. I won’t type anything in Mandarin from now on unless I know and include the tones of every word. I’ll concentrate first on learning which tones are used for each word, and then when I’m confident I’ve remembered them, I’ll go on to your lessons that concentrate on speaking the tones.
