If you break down ‘Ji dian zhong’ what does it translate to in english? :) Xie xie, Benny :)

In my Chinese course we learned zhong as o’clock.
Similar to using “It’s 5” or “It’s 5 o’clock”. In which case dian would just represent that the number is an hour and zhong would thrown on the optional ’o’clock’.
While in China I always heard them leave off the ‘zhong’ when saying times and just using ‘dian’ or ‘dian ban’.
When asking what time it was we always include zhong in the question. Someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, hope it helps!
