“Ding” is explained as “to reserve”.
However, the complete phrase that is used is “ding yi zhang”. “… yi zhang” I am guessing means to “overtake”? It is not explained in this lesson.

Thanks for clarifying that… however, these many variations of possessive count is too difficult to remember. Can I just say “yi ge” instead? It is Cantonese style, but it is simple.

It is ok to say "yi ge” for everything, but people will know that it is not correct. So the best way is just to practice
