Stop spiting!!

World Expo is coming next year to Shanghai as we all know. As a Chinese and a Shanghainese, I am proud of it.  But I remember a western guy asked me a very tough question which made really embarrassed. I didn't know how to answer.

His question is: "Why do Chinese people often spit on the street, even in some tourist attractions and seems people has no objections on it."

This is a quite difficult and good question that I have to admit. This phenomenon does exist in China, Shanghai is not an exception. I've seen lots of people spit or liter on the street.

How would I say that, is this an education problem or family education problem, or is just lack of common sense and responsibility. Personally, I think it is a bit of everything. This is annoying.

I hope the government can do more to stop this thing happening. They have launched a movement to call for every Chinese to stop spiting and liter around. However, it would still be a time consuming job. I don't think it's possible to fix this problem completely in a year or two.

Therefore, please just be patient.

I think anyone who spits on the street should be fined right there and then, just like they do in some countrys like Singapore. Stricter laws may help to solve this problem very quickly, not to worry about time consumption anymore.

In my country, we have the same problem, and I think the government should be more rigid.

If the government is not doing much, then volunteers can help by standing on street and observing passerbys, if someone spits or litters you can catch them red handed, ask them to pick up their trash and put it in dustbins, and educate them at the spot. Maybe you can hand them some brochures or give them some bags for spitting for free, and tell them the importance of keeping Shanghai and China clean.

When, a long time ago, I was in China, I went to eat in a nice restaurant, and even there I saw a man spitting on the polished floor. I was quite taken aback, but nobody ells seemed to be taking notice of it.
They told me this was a custom in China, better to spit something out then swallow it and get sick, so they explained to me. They even had special bowls for it to spit in called a spittoon, so I guess it is an old custom in the far east.

Before I visited Beijing, a friend made a comment to me. He said there were lots and lots of people in Beijing. If everyone spit all at once, it would be a lot of spit everywhere. When I came back, I told him that he was close. The difference was, it wasn’t everyone spitting, but many people spitting alot. Yes, and it was everywhere!
