Many of my students ask me whether they should learn how to write and when should learn it. I always suggest them to learn speaking first. Especially for adults and people with jobs. The reasons are as follows:
1. If you have a job, do you think there will be some free time for you to learn both speaking and writing?
2. Chinese has 2 systems, speaking and writing each of them requires a huge amount of time to learn. If you learn both at the same time. Most likely, you're not going to master any of them at the end.
For business people, my suggestions is: learn how to speak first, when you have about 250-300 vocabularies, then it's the time to learn Characters, because it can help you to remember the words faster and easier, more and more all the words you learned before will make more sense to you.
As for the children or full time students, you guys can learn speaking and writing at the same time, but it will still be very difficult even for a young kid who has better memory and energy.
I'd love to hear different ideas, opinions and thoughts from you guys. Let me know what you think. Remember, Chinese is just as easy as ABC!
